When I was on on macOS I didn’t use Time Machine, but used CrashPlan instead. Now, I am using Tresorit, which is a mix of CrashPlan and DropBox, built on zero-knowledge technology.
I love Tresorit, because it is fast, gives full control of what you want to sync and you can recover deleted files easily. Although, you can’t go through various versions of a given file like CrashPlan or Time Machine allow you to. But that’s a feature I hardly ever need.
